Nonprofit of the Month: Heritage Church and RIP Medical Debt

Jul 29, 2020, 2:37 PM

One organization is doing what it can to face the high costs of medical care.

The Hastings Mutual Insurance Company Charitable Foundation recognizes the contributions of nonprofit organizations in the communities we serve. Each month, we’ll honor one of those organizations as our Nonprofit of the Month.

Medical debt is an expensive, and sometimes life-changing, cost for more than 137 million Americans every year. Financial experts and political leaders have been discussing the problem but have not outlined a plan to reduce the expense.

That’s where RIP Medical Debt helps. Donations to the organization are used to buy medical debt, the often thousands of dollars people owe for hospital visits and life-saving care they can’t afford. Once the debt is paid off, RIP Medical Debt continues to help those in need — a medical debt that simply can’t be paid isn’t just stress on an individual or family. It also impacts a person’s credit rating, making it more difficult and expensive for any other financial support, like buying a house.

Financial Trouble

Heritage Church of Lake Zurich, Illinois, connects people in the local Lake County community with RIP Medical Debt, and have been doing it for years. In 2019, the church raised $20,000 for RIP Medical Debt.

Heritage Church  and the RIP Medical Debt program are supported by Hastings Mutual and Aleckson Insurance of Lake Zurich.
