The Hastings Mutual Insurance Company Charitable Foundation recognizes the contributions of nonprofit organizations in the communities we serve. Each month, we’ll honor one of those organizations as our Nonprofit of the Month.
The Shepherd Hall Transitional Living Program at Vista Maria provides temporary housing for homeless women in the Detroit area. Vista Maria supports more than 1,200 girls, women, and their families each year. Vista Maria offers a variety of programs in addition to Shepherd Hall:
The Shepherd Hall program is specifically for 18- to 24-year-old women who need a place to stay while developing life skills like creating a budget, job searching, cooking, and physical and mental health care.
Some came from Michigan’s foster care program, while others may be homeless or living without parental guidance. In the Shepherd Hall program, participants have a bed and meals — and friends — while they search for a job or work on earning a high school or other diploma. There’s almost two dozen women in the program now. They can stay for up to two years if needed.
“Vista Maria provides a continuum of care to help vulnerable youth heal, believe in their worth, and build the skills needed to succeed,” said President and CEO Angela Aufdemberge.
Vista Maria and the Shepherd Hall program is supported by Insurance Exchange Agency, LLC, in Northville, MI.
“(Shepherd Hall) is vital to the overall sustainable success of these vulnerable young women,” said Mary Williams of Insurance Exchange Agency. “Vista Maria makes a significant difference in the lives of girls and young women that have been abused, neglected and traumatized. Vista Maria is saving lives.”
