As growth continued, ground was broken in 1980 for a 30,000-square-foot addition to the home office, at this point housing 150 employees in space meant for 65. Despite the crowded conditions, morale was high, and the new space was occupied in 1981. The data processing age came to Hastings Mutual in 1982 with the development of an automated policy processing system.
Also in 1982, a reinsurance agreement with Booth, Seal and Company (through Lloyds of London) gave Hastings Mutual the authority to issue policies to a limit of $5 million, a privilege not given to many companies in those days.
As Hastings Mutual approached its 100th anniversary, the president at the time, Mr. Franklin Rothfuss wrote, "The pride of the first 100 years is only overshadowed by my optimism for the future. …We have built a reputation based on good service. We can depend on this degree of trust to serve as the foundation for future growth."
